One of my favorite things to do when I feel like unwinding is to head to the spa (or enjoy a nice glass of wine). This Thursday ladies across Chicago can do both! The spa at dana is hosting an exclusive spa event to introduce its new spa menu featuring the amazing French product line, Sothy’s. The menu includes spa classics infused with dana’s unique touch (think diamond microdermabrasion machines and special aromatherapy massage treatments).
There will be several different ‘treatment stations’ set up including but not limited to:
· A nail station (receive complimentary polish changes and sample scrubs)
· Chair massage
· Aromatherapy room
· Sweet Escape Facial including a sample mask
· A Microderm presentation
While there, you can enjoy wine and passed appetizers from aja. In addition, all guests who book a future treatment at the event will receive a 20% discount and be entered into a raffle to win $300 worth of spa services and $500 worth of Sothy’s products.
If you’d like to attend please RSVP to events@zapwater.com. I hope to see everyone there!

Since starting at Zapwater more than two years ago, it has become tradition after a hot summer for our office to plan regular potluck lunches to get us through those cooler Chicago months.
From Thanksgiving to the Olympics, each potluck has its own unique theme and features an array of dishes. Zapwater’s David Zapata always takes care of our main dish, while the rest of us play sous-chef, experimenting with new foods, bringing old office favorites or scavenging the salad bar at Whole Foods for a last-minute contribution.
This week, the Zapwater team kicked off our potluck season with a tailgate themed lunch. Wings, homemade chili, and chips and dip were among our starting line up, while pasta sides and veggies rounded out the special teams. Susie and our newest intern, Stephanie, definitely scored with their desserts.
Do you have any ideas for our next office potluck? Send your suggested themes to sarah@zapwater.com and maybe we’ll send you an invite to our next lunch!
Bon Appetit ☺

Although I never like to see summer come to an end, with the turning of the leaves comes turning of menus at some of our favorite Chicago restaurants. At one Chicago cornerstone, much more than just the menu is getting refreshed this season. Rhapsody, located in the heart of Chicago’s bustling Loop, has recently announced the addition of Executive Chef Dean Zanella. Under his culinary direction, Rhapsody plans to continue to impress offering a new menu inspired by fresh Italian flavors and accented by local, seasonal ingredients.
You may remember Chef Zanella from tenures at long time top Chicago restaurants such as Grappa, Charlie Trotters and 312 Chicago, among others. He is an influential supporter of local farmers, and was one of the first chefs in Chicago to truly embrace the Green City Market and it’s mission to bring fresh, local produce and ingredients to both chefs and supporters of local, sustainable food.
The new menu, boasting fresh Italian flavors and local, seasonal ingredients, diners can expect a vast selection of antipasti items, in addition to handmade pasta and signature entrees. A few sample items include:
Antipasti: Crostini of Grilled Figs, Grilled Smoked Prosciutto Wrapped Shrimp and Grilled Pheasant Sausage
Handmade pasta dishes: Zanella’s, Gnocchi, Risotto of the Day and Squid Ink Chitarra
Entrée dishes: Grilled House-made Italian Sausage, Poached Wild Salmon and Braised Pork Shoulder
This year put your flip flops away with a smile, grab a jacket and head to Rhapsody for the flavors of fall.

In the world of American Pop Culture you can be scorching hot one second and ice cold the next. With massive record sales, a huge world tour, and a headlining gig at Chicago’s Lollapalooza it would appear Lady Gaga is on top of the world. But backlash of her raw meat dress at last nights MTV Video Music Awards would appear that some are growing tired of the shtick.
The most successful pop stars are the ones who constantly reinvent themselves (Madonna) without looking like desperate wannabes (Christina Aguilera anyone?) It is a very fine line that many have talked but few can walk. Gaga is in a crossroads right now. Does she base her antics off a deeper hidden message? Or is she simply dressing weird for nothing more than shock and attention? What made many people love her now seems to be pushing people away.
Without compromising her own image Gaga needs to bear in mind that she doesn’t want to deter fans either. I mean after you strip away the makeup, the glitter, and the gays, one can see that Lady Gaga truly is a musical visionary with a political voice to match. It will be her next moves that determine whether she is this generations pop icon or a musical spark that the public got wary of.
If Gaga throws on jeans and a white t shirt and belts one out, now that would be truly shocking!

Blog. Five years ago, when I was just about to start college, this word meant nothing to me. Sure they had been around, but people who had their own blog were, let’s face it, thought of as people who liked to share too much information about themselves or were really, really in touch with their feelings. But, four years later, when I was receiving my Bachelor’s degree in News-Editorial Journalism, the word had taken on a whole new meaning and life.
Meet with any career counselor or any industry big-wig and all they ask communications students is: “How are you marketing yourself?” Basically, I am my blog. A company is its blog. A newspaper is its blog. Blogging has become an extension of our personality and who we are. If you want to stand out in this difficult industry you have to create and sustain a blog that is unique. What makes your fashion blog better than the 1 million other fashion blogs? How will you design it? Who will want to read it?
While blogging is still prevalent and useful in personal and professional endeavors, there is a new social media tool that threatens to steal a blog’s glory—the app. Two years ago, the iphone was a luxury item, present day it’s in the hand of a majority of business professionals, students, parents, and basically anyone. Just as blogging changed the way we write our resume and market ourselves, apps will change that once again.
Our new client, Red Foundry, has made creating apps easy and accessible. Just as Blogspot and WordPress made creating your own blog as easy as uploading or registering your name, Red Foundry has done that for apps. With the social media world constantly changing and companies constantly looking for applicants who are knowledgeable and up-to-date on the latest technology, creating your own app can set you ahead; whether it’s funny, company related, or for personal reasons.
App. A word that is common now, but a word that will be increasingly more powerful in the future.

If you were spending money on a marketing program, would you want a barely passing grade?
Of course not. But that is the problem with Drake University’s new self titled “D+” marketing campaign.
As an agency with a growing education practice, we hope our grades are a little higher.

Labor Day weekend is officially over which means fall is just around the corner. Although I’m sad to see summer go (it always goes by way too fast), I am starting to really look forward to the fall season. Nothing is better than crisp weather, sweaters and the scents and flavors of fall (pumpkin, burning leaves, fall spices, etc.).
One of the reasons I look forward to fall so much is because I love EVERYTHING pumpkin. From pumpkin lattes to pumpkin spa treatments – I want to do it all while it’s in season! The spa at dana, located in the dana hotel and spa, is offering a pumpkin spa mani/pedi treatment starting this September 22nd (the official first day of fall) and I can’t wait to try it out!
I also plan on checking out GAVIN Boutique’s new e-commerce site, www.shopGavin.com , to pick up some new fall fashions. GAVIN Boutique always has an amazing collection and is based in Evanston, so the new website will surely make shopping there easy for a city-girl like me (who doesn’t have a car). I encourage all of you to check it out!
And if you love pumpkins as much as I do, don’t forget to tune into ABC this September 28th to watch Blue Plate Catering’s chef de cuisine demonstrate how to make pumpkin-bran waffles!

Zapwater’s always staying ahead of the curve when it comes to innovative public relations. We constantly integrate traditional media relations efforts with new digital media channels available. Even as we run our own Zapwater blog you’re reading here, we also perform a lot of blogger relations of behalf of our clients. In the blogosphere, consumers constantly share new ideas, referrals and comment on various product offerings and the many brand names out there. Every campaign needs to determine if blogger outreach can impact their overall PR program. Funny enough….what’s the most influential group of blogs out there? Well, it’s Mom.
On behalf of Zapwater client Michael Gaffney and the American Schools of Flower Design, we’ve found a lot of success in hitting up the Mommy bloggers lately. These individuals have some great stories and advice to share, and also happen to be Gaffney’s prime target market for new enrollments of his National floral design classes as a new way to build recession-proof careers. Sure, television morning shows are great, but the third party validation achieved when placements pop up in blogs such as Jen’s List (with more than 14,000 subscribers in Orange County).
Rule of thumb – Mom’s always had great advice growing up, so don’t forget about her in today’s world of PR.
