The accolades (and press) continue for Zapwater client HUB 51. HUB 51 came out on top in 312 Dining Diva’s annual Who Came Out on Top Nightlife Poll. It wasn’t even close. HUB 51 garnered 64% of the vote. It must have been the Carrot Cake! Congrats to HUB 51.

With 2008 winding down, it might be a good time to reflect on the year that has been. But I am not like that! In the spirit of Zapwater’s Holiday Card, I am ready to burst into 2009. It will be a very busy year and I already have much on the agenda. Here are some of the things (some of which didn’t make it on to the holiday card) that I am looking forward to in 2009:
1) My parents will both be 60 in 2009. I plan on taking them on a trip to mark this occasion. It will be a place they both enjoy dearly. 2) A new President will be in office! I am thankful and eager to see how President-Elect Obama handles the challenges of running this country. 3) The New York Rangers returning to Chicago to face the Blackhawks. I will finally have an opportunity to see my hometown team play here in Chicago. 4) My friend’s November wedding in Rincon, Puerto Rico. It will be a perfect escape before the winter descends. 5) The return of the band Phish. I don’t know if I am more excited to see these guys in concert again or to just go to several shows with old friends.
So if you had the blues in 2008, it is time to move forward and push on. 2009 is near and I for one can’t wait. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

So after starting my career in media relations at a boutique firm and spending the last two years at Zapwater, I definitely have seen both the high’s and low’s of working at an agency. However this past year at Zapwater, I have seen a lot of amazing accomplishments the entire team has achieved on behalf of clients and as one of the few growing agencies in Chicago. Below please find my TOP 10 list of media relations highlights for 2008 from Zapwater clients:
 10. K.Amato earrings were seen on Eva Longoria Parker four (4) times in a two (2) month span.
09. Green Tie Ball XVII gets the most amount of publicity since its early days of inception.
08. The wrap party for Johnny’s Depp’s movie “Public Enemies” is hosted at Bon V.
07. le Dress opens in Wicker Park and gets awarded best new dress boutique by Chicago Magazine.
06. Kelly Edwards gets major national publicity in Good Housekeeping, Cosmopolitan, and the Tyra Banks Show.
05. Kim Kleeman of Shakespeare Squared was awarded 40 Under 40 in Crain’s Chicago Business.
04. FOX Chicago (WFLD-TV) honors RA Sushi as the best sushi restaurant in Chicago.
03. The Hotel Sax Chicago hosts an amazing two-day unveiling with over 5, 000 people in attendance.
02. The Illinois Film Office, Flashpoint Academy and Zapwater host a party at Sundance for the movie “The Merry Gentleman.”
01. HUB 51 finally opens and is most talked about new restaurant in Chicago with a superb menu and unbelievable events.

I love to brag about our clients. I often say that Zapwater is proud to work with the best and brightest. The fact that so many clients have garnered Forty Under Forty accolades around the country only confirms that statement. Recently, another Zapwater client was bestowed with this honor and this one has special meaning to me. Congratulations to Anthony Marlowe, President of TMone for being named to Corridor Business Journal’s Forty under Forty list as among Iowa’s best and brightest. The CBJ is the weekly business newspaper for the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City Corridor.
The reason this has special meaning to me is because I first met Anthony when I was a recent college graduate managing a Congressional Campaign in Illinois. He was a senior at Lyons Township High School. After speaking to his AP Government class, I convinced Anthony to come volunteer on the campaign. We’ve been friends ever since. He is also a strong representation of the young entrepreneurs that Zapwater loves working with.

Those of you that celebrate the wonderful holiday of Christmas may not be aware of what goes on Christmas Eve for us non-celebrating folks. As the four questions ask…why is this night different from all other nights? Because Chicago’s “chosen” people gather for a night of food, drink and entertainment that doesn’t involve decking the halls or Mom’s eggnog. There are basically two options for Christmas Eve…One, an exciting night out munching on Egg Rolls and Mongolian Beef at the favorite local Chinese Restaurant or multi-plex. OR…take a swig of Maneschewitz and hit the town. In the last few years, Christmas Eve has become one of the biggest party nights of the year with a slew of events happening around the city. This year, the new kids on the Hubbard Street block, HUB 51 will be hosting “Hubukkah” to honor the holiday eve. Pitchers of Maneschewitz Sangria will be flowing and dreidels will be spinning…so don’t burn down the house lighting the 4th night’s candle. Annie Neyman Group Director, Hospitality

Sharing an office with a girl named Holly Winter (yes – it’s her real name), you’d think seasonal spirit wouldn’t be hard to come by. But the truth is, I dread the cold days and heavy snow that follow the winter months here in Chicago and often wonder why I wasn’t lucky enough to be born in Florida, Texas, or better yet, on the equator. There really is not doubt about it – I am a true summer girl. And while I have to admit that there is something wonderful about the first big snowfall of the season, I am still the first one in our office to skip leaving for lunch the second a flake hits the sidewalk.
So, as I was clumsily trudging through four inches of blizzard this past Tuesday on my way to the gym, I was thinking more about avoiding the stray taxi sliding gracefully out of control than I was appreciating how snowfall in Chicago feels like being on the inside of a snow globe. What kind of person goes to workout during a snowstorm, you ask? The kind with summer on the brain. Swimsuit season is only six months off, after all….

Every year as Thanksgiving dinner is ending, someone inevitably asks “So, what are we doing for Christmas?”
I have two complaints. First, can’t we all just relax and enjoy a meal anymore? Why is everyone always looking to the next event, holiday, or get together? I guess some of it is unavoidable, but I feel like we’ve all forgotten how to live in the moment and enjoy our time with family and friends.
My second complaint is with gift giving. I just don’t get it. I would never want to take anything away from kids and the fun of Christmas. Nothing beats the anticipation of waiting for Santa Claus to come down the chimney in hopes that you’ll be left with some presents from your well thought out list of “must haves or I’m going to die!” But, now that I’m an adult and have been working, I find it totally frivolous and unnecessary to have my mother buying me socks with candy canes on them. If it strikes me that I need something, I can now afford to buy it for myself and actually take some pride in being able to do so. Each year as the holiday season approaches, we decide that this will be the year that we no longer exchange gifts. However, Christmas Eve always ends with me taking home a bag of things I put on the floor in my closet until it strikes me to clean it out three years later and throw everything away. My family just doesn’t seem to think that eating a great meal, drinking, laughing and playing games is celebration enough. Oh well, maybe 2009 will be the year.
So, what are we all doing for New Year’s?

With nine girls in the Zapwater office, there is no shortage of “girl talk.” Girl talk can range anywhere from clothes to shoes to new CRAZY diet secrets to of course exercise tips. One rainy afternoon, Holly, Annie, Mayra and I were discussing new interesting ways to burn some calories – and then we found The Bar Method. Annie was excited because she was a dancer and thought we were dancing, Holly was down because she thought we were going to a bar, Mayra fired her old gym and was looking for a new workout plan, and I was skeptical. I am not really into all of these new age, hocus pocus, core workouts. Call me old fashioned–or just my father’s daughter–but I am happy with a pair of running shoes and some concrete.
Upon walking into the studio on Belmont and Sheffield, we were greeted by a large wooden structure and told to hang from it for 30 seconds–WHAT??!?! After having a quick laugh we all hung from the stall bar and were ready for long lean thighs and lifted seats! From the very first moment the class began we were going strong. The Bar Method teaches muscle exhaustion followed by muscle stretching in order to sculpt your muscles making them long and lean. Let me tell you, they were not kidding about that muscle exhaustion. My muscles were burning and my legs were shaking uncontrollably the entire hour! I have done a lot of exercising over the years and I have never been as sore in my entire life as I was when I left that class!
For the last 30 days, we have been tucking and wagging four times a week. I was not a believer going in, but I am a changed woman. The Bar Method is one of the hardest things I have ever done! I have a new found respect for “alternative workouts” but I have to say I miss my Nikes–back to the track!
